AUGUSTA – Students in the Architecture program at the University of Maine at Augusta will open their yearly exhibition in the Charles Danforth Gallery located in Jewett Hall on Thursday, October 10 from 12 – 1 p.m. The exhibition includes projects spanning four years of work on architectural gambits from natatoriums to passive-certified public housing, and reflects the program’s strength in linking sustainability with affordability and designing spaces that respond dynamically to their sites.

Projects represented in the exhibition range from more speculative first-year projects through advanced work completed in the fourth year of the program. “The program is designed to begin with the imaginative and progress toward the more concrete,” program specialist Emily Pettengill explains. “Sustainability is on everyone’s mind, so our students learn practical ways to make buildings with site-specific, often local materials, and thoughtfully-designed mechanical systems that exist in dialogue with their environments.” Moving from more speculative and theoretical first-year models to complex designs by more advanced students, the works on view give viewers a window into the process of learning and creation architects in training complete at UMA in their work towards professional certification in the field.

The Bachelor of Architecture degree at the University of Maine at Augusta is Maine’s only professional architecture program and is the only NAAB accredited five-year professional architecture degree in northern New England. In addition to offering high-quality core values in space, scale, light, and design with intention, which assist students in obtaining their professional architecture license, the program is committed to the community the program brings together. The Architecture program’s mission is “architecture through engagement.” The program “educates and empowers students to explore, investigate, and analyze the build environment. Engagement brings students into active contact with each other, their coursework, and community partners across Maine.”

All are invited to view and enjoy these visions of the future built environment conceived by UMA’s talented roster of architects in training. The exhibition opens with a reception Thursday, October 10 from 12 – 1 p.m., and will be on view during gallery hours from 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Charles Danforth Gallery in UMA’s Jewett Hall through November 6, 2019.
