UMA’s Trauma-Informed Emergency Management degree helps responders in their communities.

Master of Science

Master of Science students will complete a minimum of 30 credits. All Master’s students will take six core courses (minimum 18 credits) as well as four additional courses (minimum 12 credits) in their chosen Concentration. Course descriptions can be found here.

Students must enroll in a Concentration upon admission, or by using the Change of Program Submission Form. The Concentration options for the Master of Science are:

  • No Concentration
  • Data Analytics
  • Community Resilience
  • Emergency Management and Preparedness
  • Mental Health

Master’s students will close their program of study with TEM 599 Capstone in Trauma-Informed Emergency Management, taken independently or with other graduating students. Before registering for TEM 599, the student must complete the TEM 599 Capstone Application (Appendix B) and seek the required approvals from the Course Instructor and Project Advisor (or TEM Coordinator if the instructor and advisor are the same person).

In this capstone course, students will synthesize their capstone project with the TEM curriculum. Students may complete a capstone project prior to taking the Capstone course (e.g., with TEM 594 Independent Study or TEM 595 Internship) but that is not required. If students have not completed their capstone project prior to the class, they must have an actionable project ready to launch and able to be completed in the semester of their Capstone course.

Master’s students will also achieve the Graduate Certificate in pursuit of their Master of Science.

Graduate Certificate

Graduate Certificate students will complete a minimum of 16 credits. All Certificate students will take four core courses (10-12 credits) as well as two additional courses (6 credits) in their chosen Concentration. Course descriptions can be found here.

Students must enroll in a concentration upon admission, or by using the Change of Program Submission Form. The Concentration options are:

  • Data Analytics
  • Community Resilience
  • Emergency Management and Preparedness
  • Mental Health

Students are encouraged to talk with their advisor before registering for classes. Certificate students who may later pursue the Master of Science are encouraged to explore those curricular requirements.

Students pursuing the Data Analytics Concentration as well as students who may later pursue the Master of Science are encouraged to take TEM 587 Research Issues and Data Literacy in Public Management for 3 credits. All other students may register to take this course for 1 credit.

Accelerated Program

The TEM Accelerated Program allows UMA undergraduate students to get a jump start on their graduate career by taking TEM courses before graduation. Students will apply for provisional acceptance into the Graduate Certificate or Master of Science in TEM and take four of our graduate courses (12 credits) which will apply toward their undergraduate degrees. Students will then apply for full admission to the TEM program for the academic year following their baccalaureate graduation, at which point these courses would transfer in to apply to the Certificate or Master’s in TEM.

Benefits of the TEM Accelerated Program

  • Save time and money – fewer overall credits.
  • Access to faculty, advising, and extracurricular resources available to all TEM students.

Admission Requirements

  • Current enrollment in an undergraduate degree program at UMA.
  • Minimum 60 credit hours completed.
  • Minimum Cumulative G.P.A: 3.0.
  • Completion of Accelerated Program Application.

Students must achieve a B- or better in each TEM course and a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0 or better for the Accelerated Program credits to confer toward their graduate degree or certificate. Please refer to the UMA Undergraduate Academic Policies and UMA Graduate Academic Policies for additional information.

Each 3 credit TEM 500-599 course will be applied to the student’s undergraduate degree progress as an Upper-Level Elective, unless a specific substitution is approved by the student’s Major Coordinator. A substitution form may be required.
