There’s been a lot happening at Stevens Commons in Hallowell, where UMA’s new residence hall is quickly coming together.
Margaret Chase Morrill Hall, UMA’s new residence hall, is scheduled to open in fall 2027 with 60 additional beds and a new dining hall, giving more students the chance to live and learn as part of UMA’s residential community. The building is named for Margaret Chase Morrill, the first woman to graduate from the University of Maine’s civil engineering program, which makes watching it rise floor by floor all the more fitting.
One of the biggest recent milestones is done: the elevator shaft is complete. With that in place, crews have turned their attention to the exterior walls, which are quickly changing how the whole project looks. What was open framing not long ago is now reading clearly as a building.
Right now, crews are working their way up floor by floor. The exterior walls are going up on the third floor, and once those are finished, the team will move on to the fourth.
Once the exterior walls are complete, the work will move indoors, and crews will begin the interior build-out. So while the most dramatic outside changes may soon give way to quieter progress within, there’s still plenty ahead as the building continues to come together.
