This September, in recognition of National Recovery Month, faculty from three University of Maine System campuses are again coming together to host free NARCAN (naloxone) trainings focused on overdose prevention. The University of Maine at Augusta, the University of Maine at Fort Kent, and the University of Maine at Presque Isle are offering the training within the same week across their campus communities.
The trainings are being hosted by faculty and will be led by regional trainers who provide NARCAN trainings in their respective counties:
- University of Maine at Augusta: Tuesday, September 22, 12-1 p.m., Randall Student Center, Room 248, and via Zoom (offered in collaboration with Sweetser).
- University of Maine at Fort Kent: Wednesday, September 23, 6-7 p.m., Nadeau Teleconference Room, UMFK campus (offered in collaboration with Community Action in Aroostook County).
- University of Maine at Presque Isle: Thursday, September 24, 6-7 p.m., MPR Campus Center (offered in collaboration with Community Action in Aroostook County).
The faculty leading this year’s events at UMA are Dr. Wendy St. Pierre and Dr. Nicole Achey, Associate Professors of Mental Health and Human Services; at UMFK, Dr. Lisa Lavoie, Associate Professor of Behavioral Science; and at UMPI, Dr. Beverly Wagner, Bachelor of Social Work Program Director and Assistant Professor of Social Work.
This faculty collaboration is a product of the UMS Behavioral Health Collaborative, started by Dr. Wendy St. Pierre at the University of Maine at Augusta to bring behavioral health faculty together across campuses to share information about their programs and students and to plan events open to students at all participating institutions. The group meets monthly and currently includes faculty at UMA, UMFK, and UMPI.
This group is also hosting a two-part Graduate School informational event focused on behavioral health pathways. The first session will focus on sharing information about graduate school, the application process, and more. The second session will be welcoming UMS faculty members, who will share information about their graduate programs that align with behavioral health careers. The virtual sessions are scheduled for Tuesday, September 29, and Tuesday, October 6, from 12:30-1:30 p.m. via Zoom.
