ULTIMATE CITIZENS: Film Screening and Discussion

Join us for a special screening of the inspiring film ULTIMATE CITIZENS, which chronicles the remarkable journey of Jamshid Khajavi, a 65-year-old Iranian American public school counselor, on Wednesday, May 21st at 6:00pm in Jewett Hall Auditorium (Farber Forum) at the University of Maine at Augusta, 46 University Dr. Augusta, ME 04330. This event is free and open to the public.

In a community characterized by a significant population of immigrant and refugee students, Jamshid employs the dynamic sport of Ultimate Frisbee as a therapeutic tool to foster healing and resilience among children facing various challenges. This heartwarming narrative not only highlights the power of sports in building connections but also showcases the profound impact one individual can have in transforming lives.

Set against the backdrop of an America where many families struggle to make ends meet, the film follows Mr. Jamshid as he coaches a team of underdog kids, guiding them through the trials and triumphs of their journey toward the world’s largest youth tournament. The story captures the essence of teamwork, perseverance, and the importance of community support, illustrating how these young athletes learn to overcome obstacles both on and off the field. Through Jamshid’s mentorship, the children discover their potential and the strength that comes from unity and shared goals.

Following the screening, we invite you to participate in a thought-provoking discussion and question and answer session with the film participant, Jamshid Khajavi via Zoom to delve deeper into the themes presented in the film. This is an opportunity to reflect on the challenges faced by immigrant and refugee families and the role of mentorship in fostering resilience as well as to inspire actionable steps toward fostering supportive environments for all youth.
