The University of Maine at Augusta is welcoming its largest incoming class of first-year, first-time students on record, with more than 350 students overall, including more than 300 attending full time.
Move-in day on Thursday, Aug. 27, offered one of the first signs of that growth. Students and families arrived with packed cars and boxes, met new roommates and neighbors, and began settling into life at UMA.
UMA housing is at capacity for the 2026-27 academic year, with 157 students living in university housing in Hallowell and in hotel accommodations serving the Augusta and Bangor campuses. Those students represent only one part of the incoming class, but the demand for housing is an important sign of the growth of UMA’s residential experience.
UMA is preparing to expand its permanent housing in Hallowell. Margaret Chase Morrill Hall is scheduled to open there in fall 2027 with 60 additional beds and a new dining hall, giving more students the opportunity to live and learn as part of a residential community.
The record incoming class extends well beyond university housing. New students are beginning their UMA experience at the Augusta and Bangor campuses, at centers across Maine and online.
