For 60 years, the University of Maine at Augusta has helped real people turn ambition into action. Whether you’re starting out or starting over, UMA meets you where you are.

Now, we’re celebrating the stories that brought us here and the momentum that will carry us into the next 60 years.

“For sixty years, UMA has met students where they are by removing barriers to education and helping Mainers realize what’s possible.  As we celebrate this milestone, we honor our rich past, the courage of our students to persist, and the power of opportunity through education.  We also celebrate what UMA is becoming in the twenty-first century.  UMA’s story is the story of our students, and the next chapter begins with those who understand the value of higher education to change their lives for the better.”

Why this moment matters

UMA started in 1965 with a simple idea: that people shouldn’t have to leave their communities or their lives to get a college education. What began as a small center in Augusta has grown into a statewide university that meets students where they are.

Sixty years later, we’re still guided by that same belief. UMA is transforming lives through flexible, affordable learning, preparing students for real careers, and strengthening communities across Maine. We’re the only university in the University of Maine System with campuses and centers across the state because access matters, no matter your zip code.

This anniversary is about honoring where we’ve been and looking ahead to what’s next.

Because one choice can change everything

The right choice, at the right moment, can change a life. Whether it’s coming to UMA fresh out of high school, going back to school, or switching careers, it’s about saying yes to something new. UMA has helped thousands of students turn ambition into action.
