The UMA Nursing Program is led by our Program Coordinator, Dr. Shannon Gauvin. For high-level program inquiries, policy questions, or institutional partnership discussions, you can contact the main nursing department office on the Augusta campus.

Because our Holistic Nursing program expands across the state, our faculty and instructional staff are distributed to support you locally. While the core administrative offices are on the Augusta Campus, we have dedicated faculty physically based at the Bangor Campus, the Lewiston Center, and our residential partnership site at UMF. The curriculum was designed, authored, and continually updated by the UMA Nursing Program Faculty in alignment with the strict national standards of the American Holistic Nurses Credentialing Corporation (AHNCC). Spearheaded by our Director of Nursing Programs, Dr. Shannon Gauvin, and our expert instructional staff, this innovative curriculum was recognized nationally with the American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) Institutional Excellence in Holistic Nursing Education Award. Our faculty explicitly engineered these courses to bridge the gap between rigorous modern medicine and the restorative art of nursing.

Unlike traditional programs built strictly on a clinical-pathology model, UMA’s unique Bachelor of Science with a major in Holistic Nursing is anchored in an integral-holistic framework. Our curriculum draws its core principles directly from world-renowned nursing and psychological theories, specifically:

  • Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring: Emphasizing the deep, transpersonal relationship between the nurse and patient.
  • Barbara Dossey’s Theory of Integral Nursing: Presenting a four-quadrant approach to healing that balances the objective physical body with subjective internal experiences.
  • Ken Wilber’s Integral Philosophy: Promoting a comprehensive framework of human awareness and growth.
  • Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs: Laying the foundational understanding of basic physical, psychological, and spiritual human requirements.

Every faculty member lists their standard office hours in their course syllabi on Brightspace at the start of the semester. To request an appointment outside of those times—or if you are a prospective student—the fastest method is to email the faculty member directly using their @maine.edu address listed in the directory below. Many faculty offer flexible Zoom meetings alongside in-person campus hours.

You can check your assignment by logging into your MaineStreet Student Center. Your advisor’s name and contact link will be displayed on the right-hand side of your dashboard.

Pre-nursing students work primarily with UMA’s Academic Advising Center specialists to ensure all science and math benchmarks are successfully cleared. Once you are officially accepted into the core, lock-step nursing clinical cohort, you will be formally transitioned to a dedicated Nursing Faculty Advisor who will guide you through your clinical sequence to graduation.

For initial transcript reviews and transfer evaluations, you can contact UMA Admissions or your regular Academic Advisor. If you’re a working RN entering the RN-to-BSN Completion path and want to evaluate specialized national certifications or build an academic portfolio for nursing elective credit, your advisor will connect you directly with our CPL faculty coordinators.

Do not reach out to individual course instructors for placement logistics. All questions regarding hospital clearances, background checks, immunization logs, and specific site assignments must go through the Nursing Clinical Placement Coordinator.
