International Day of Persons with Disabilities: A moment for recognition, celebration, and action

On December 3, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) focuses worldwide attention on the experiences of people with disabilities and the ongoing effort to create communities where everyone can participate fully. Established by the United Nations in 1992, the day highlights both the progress made and the work ahead in improving access across all areas of life.

More than one billion people worldwide, about 15% of the population, live with disabilities. IDPD is not only a call to reduce barriers; it’s also a time to recognize the creativity, problem-solving, leadership, and perspectives that people with disabilities contribute in every sphere of society. Their impact is woven through our workplaces, arts, sciences, families, and civic life, and the day serves as a reminder to uplift those contributions more intentionally.

In Maine, where more than 13% of residents identify as having a disability, this observance carries particular relevance. Ongoing work across the state includes improving employment access, expanding transportation options, and encouraging universal design in public spaces. These efforts strengthen Maine’s communities and open doors for people of all abilities to fully participate in public and professional life.

At UMA, IDPD is an opportunity to reflect on how accessibility supports the university’s mission and how it shapes the daily experiences of students, faculty, and staff. UMA continues to invest in accessible facilities, academic and technological accommodations and support services that help remove barriers to learning and engagement. These initiatives are part of a broader commitment to ensuring that every member of the university community has what they need to thrive.

IDPD underscores an ongoing truth: accessibility isn’t a single initiative, but a sustained effort that grows stronger when we acknowledge achievements, listen to lived experiences, and celebrate the diverse strengths within our community. As UMA marks this day, the focus remains on fostering an environment where each individual’s contributions are recognized and where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
