Understanding the Basics

Understanding Prerequisites

A prerequisite is something that must be completed or a condition that must be met before you can register for a class.

How do I find out whether a course I want to take has a prerequisite before I register for classes?

  • Browse the Course Catalog and review the course description prior to registering for classes.

Course Instruction Modes

Course instruction modes are how UMA defines the way classes are taught. While building your schedule and looking for classes, it is important to narrow your search using the “Mode of Instruction” drop-down menu if you only want to enroll in courses based on how they will be taught.

UMA students take their classes in several different ways:

  • In-Person — class taught on campus/in a UMA Center on the days and times listed.
  • Hybrid/blended — mixture of in-person and online components. Students will attend the in-person class on the days and times listed as well as follow all assignments in Brightspace.
  • Online LIVE/Distance Synchronous — synchronous using Zoom on the days and times listed. Students can attend from any location, including UMA Centers.
  • Online/TBA — asynchronous classes conducted through Brightspace and digital course materials. Students do not attend a scheduled class session.
  • Hyflex — options to attend in-person, synchronous using Zoom on the days and times listed, or asynchronous through Brightspace.

Academic Calendar

The Academic calendar is a schedule of all of the events that occur in an academic year. It includes the start and end dates of semesters or terms, holidays, exam periods, and other significant academic deadlines.

Check for Holds

Having these holds on your student account will prevent you from registering for classes.

Financial Terms & Conditions (FTC)

The FTC is a statement that describes the financial obligation a student accepts when he or she enrolls for classes at any campus of the University of Maine System. The statement, and its acceptance, is a legal agreement between the student and the University of Maine System. The FTC will need to be completed in MaineStreet once prior to initial registration and will be effective for the remainder of a student’s academic career.

Past Due Balance

A past due balance occurs when payment in full has not been received for charges assessed in accordance with the payment due date. If you are able to pay your balance down to below $1,000, this hold can be lifted so that you may register.

For more information or to inquire about your account balance, please contact UMA Student Accounts at 207-621-3131 or studentaccounts@maine.edu.

Immunizations

Based on Maine law, the University of Maine System requires students to be immunized against certain diseases and submit official immunization records prior to attending classes, or participation in University activities.

For more information about immunizations and how to make sure you are in compliance, please review the Immunization Policy here or contact the UMA Registrar’s office at 207-621-3079 or umaar@maine.edu.

Academic Probation

Students who currently have a GPA of below 2.0 will be required to meet with an academic advisor prior to registration to develop an action plan for future academic success.
