Step 1: Remain calm.
Step 2: Immediately activate the building fire alarm and evacuate the building in accordance with the Building Evacuation Procedures. During evacuation, use stairwells only. Do not use elevators.
Step 3: Once you are in a safe location, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY to report the fire.
Be prepared to provide the following information slowly and clearly:
- State that you are reporting a fire
- Provide the exact location of the fire
- Describe the extent of the fire, if known
- State your name
- Provide a contact telephone number
Remain on the line until instructed to hang up by the Fire Department dispatcher.
Step 4: Once you have completed the call with 911, contact UMPD Dispatch at 207-581-4040 so the University is aware of the situation and can respond appropriately.
Step 5: Do not reenter the building until an all-clear has been given by UMPD Dispatch or emergency response personnel.
