The 2026 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast Celebration
January 19, 2026 8:00 am - 10:30 am
Jeff's Catering & Event Center, 15 Littlefield Rd, Brewer, ME 04412, USA
Please join The Greater Bangor Area Branch NAACP for this annual celebration of Dr. King and Civil Rights.
Join us for good food and inspiring speeches. This year’s breakfast will offer a pork-free menu in respect of our Islamic and Jewish friends.
Our keynote speaker this year is Darmita G. Wilson. She is a transformative healthcare leader with a 35-year career focused on mentorship, health equity, and enhancing the rural healthcare workforce. As the Vice President of Medical Education at Northern Light Health, she builds strategic partnerships, oversees residency programs, and manages affiliations with more than 160 academic institutions. Her nationally recognized collaboration with Morehouse School of Medicine introduces diverse physician assistant trainees to Maine, effectively addressing provider shortages and promoting equity.
As an educator and mentor, Darmita bridges classroom learning with real-world leadership, inspiring students to pursue careers in rural healthcare and shaping future leaders through her commitment to servant leadership. Grounded in the belief that access to healthcare is a fundamental right, her leadership reflects a dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Her initiatives include system-wide Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts, mentorship programs, and participation on Maine’s Social Equity Advisory Committee. Looking ahead, she champions innovations such as tele-mentorship and AI-enabled simulation centers to strengthen rural healthcare. Guided by the principle that “true leaders don’t create followers; they create more leaders,” she continues to invest in emerging professionals—especially those from underrepresented backgrounds—ensuring that the next generation of healthcare leaders is well-equipped, empowered, and reflective of the communities they serve.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day at Bates
Martin Luther King Jr. Day at Bates
January 19, 2026 9:00 am - 9:00 pm
Bates College, 2 Andrews Rd, Lewiston, ME 04240, USA
Source: bates.edu/mlk
The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day at Bates is a community-wide opportunity to discuss, teach, and reflect on the legacy of civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr.
This year’s observance, centered on Sunday and Monday, Jan. 18–19, explores the theme of anger in social justice work. The 2026 keynote speaker is philosopher Myisha Cherry, whose work is informed by moral psychology and political philosophy. There is a lot to fear these days: economic uncertainty, raging wars, political turmoil, and social upheaval are widespread. In this sense, our era isn’t so different from Martin Luther King, Jr.’s time — an age he described as one of “catastrophic change and calamitous uncertainty,” marked by people overwhelmed by “depression and bewilderment of crippling fear, which like a nagging hound of hell, pursues our every footstep.” Yet King didn’t tell them to ignore their fear. He offered solutions — ways to face and harness it. His lessons on fear remain ever relevant.
In this talk, drawing on the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr., as well as contemporary philosophy and psychology, Myisha Cherry will explore ways to harness our fears so that we can survive and thrive in difficult times, instead of being consumed or overwhelmed by them.

“Please join us as we honor the memory and life of Martin Luther King, Jr. and explore his concept of the Beloved Community. Dr. King taught that the Beloved Community is a society built on love, justice, and nonviolence, where people overcome hatred and conflict to recognize the inherent worth in everyone, creating a reconciled, interconnected world.
“Today, we ground these ideals in real-world courage by connecting Dr. King’s vision to Robert Shetterly’s Americans Who Tell the Truth portraits. We will examine the lives of six prophetic Americans who exemplify this teaching.

UNE Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration: Public Health and MLK's Beloved Community
January 21, 2026 11:30 am - 2:00 pm
Portland, ME, and Online
Source: UNE Events calendar.
The University of New England will host its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration on Jan. 21, 2026, at noon on UNE’s Portland Campus for the Health Sciences. The event will be livestreamed, and a watch party will be held on the Biddeford Campus in the Ripich Commons, Room 104. The event brings together the UNE community to honor Martin Luther King Jr.'s vision of creating a Beloved Community. The celebration features keynote speaker Melissa Hue ’15, M.P.H. ’20, director of the Office of Economic Opportunity for the city of Portland. Hue, a two-time UNE alumna, will share insights on continuing King's legacy of empowering community builders to address needs within their contemporary Maine communities. King envisioned the Beloved Community as one grounded in mutual cooperation and shared responsibility. As he wrote, "At the heart of all that civilization has meant and developed is 'community' — the mutually cooperative and voluntary venture of [people] to assume a semblance of responsibility for [others]." The event will allow attendees to explore how this vision continues to guide efforts toward public health and community engagement today.
Following the keynote address, participants are invited to hand write cards of encouragement for individuals in Portland who are currently unhoused. The postcards, designed by UNE students, will be included in snack bags assembled by UNE students at a special service event on January 27th and delivered by Hope Squad Maine. Information on Hope Squad Maine’s mission and writing prompts will be provided.
Light refreshments will be served. If you have specific accommodation needs please contact Shannon Zlotkowski, Assistant Provost for Community and Belonging, at szlotkowski@une.edu.
